It combines various disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, history, literature, art history and many more in order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of cultural phenomena. This research orientation focusses on how culture emerges, develops, changes and affects individual and social levels.\r\n\r\nA central feature of the cultural studies research orientation at Karlshochschule is its interdisciplinary nature. Our researchers in this field draw on findings from various disciplines to analyse complex cultural phenomena. This diversity of perspectives enables us to look at cultural developments from different angles and obtain a holistic picture.\r\n\r\nAnother important aspect is the emphasis on context. Culture is not viewed in isolation, but is always located in its historical, social and political context. This means that cultural studies research often takes a diachronic approach, analysing changes and continuities over time.\r\n\r\nThe cultural studies research orientation encompasses a wide range of topics. These include cultural practices and rituals, cultural identities, cultural production and consumption, cultural representations in the media, cultural globalisation and transculturality, as well as many others. Researchers can deal with questions of cultural differentiation and integration, cultural hierarchies and power relations, cultural innovation and tradition as well as the significance of cultural heritage and memory.\r\n\r\nAn important focus of the cultural studies research orientation is on reflexivity. Researchers continually reflect on their own positions, assumptions and prejudices and scrutinise the way in which they produce knowledge about culture. This critical approach helps them to better understand the complexity of cultural phenomena and to improve their own research practices.\r\n\r\nOverall, the cultural studies research orientation offers a rich and diverse approach to the study of culture.
