Grounded in §58 (3b) of the Baden-Württemberg Higher Education Act (LHG BW), it’s a state-approved route into a full bachelor’s degree — without the detour of a Studienkolleg (a one-year preparatory college in Germany).

From the day you enroll, you’re a regular student. You attend the same classes, sit the same exams, and are fully included as part of campus life alongside your fellow students. If you successfully complete the program — earning at least 40 out of 60 ECTS credits in the first year — you can continue directly into the second year of your bachelor’s degree.

How it compares to a Studienkolleg

A Studienkolleg makes you spend a year preparing before you can start your actual degree. The Preliminary Study Program skips that entirely. You’re in the classroom from the start, getting to know your professors, building friendships, and taking part in everything university life has to offer. The Preliminary Study Program does not separate preparation from actual studies.

This makes the Preliminary Study Program a practical and motivating entry point into your academic future.

Your advantages at a glance

A full bachelor’s degree in three years — no extra preparatory year

Real academic experience from day one, with full access to courses and exams

A genuine head start on campus life and the student community

Direct relationships with professors and fellow students from the very beginning

Ready to apply?

If you have any questions about the preliminary study program, please feel free to contact the Admissions Team at admissions@karlshochschule.de

Book your consultation

Study in Germany Without a University Entrance Qualification What is the Preliminary Study Program (§58 (3b) LHG BW)?
